Elevating the profession

The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

Somewhat agree

Would you like to provide feedback about these actions?

We acknowledge there is a need to raise the status of the teaching profession - at least the perceptions. We need to change the language to ensure teacher's expertise is recognised.

We do not believe that rewarding individuals will assist in raisoing the profession, at least not to a very high extent. The status of the profession needs to be raised.

Pay and working conditions must be explored as they directly relate to the status of the profession.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

Action items need to be addressed separately as they require differnt approaches.

There is a conflict between what Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are beeing allocted and the widening participation agenda - we need to maintain diversity and support divers applications in the profession.

There is a teacher shortage across all areas, and therefore, there are no "right subjects and specialisations". All areas require more teachers.

We need to maintain our pool of Intitial Teacher Education providers. They all offer unique experiences for students to ensure all demands are met broadly across the sector.

Sub-Bachelor courses - do you mean diplomas and certifictes? Providing pathways into teaching is a great opportunity to grow our market.

Data needs to be robust and of high quality when stating statistics.

Bursaries are a great opportunity for many students to be able to study ITE courses.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

When an initiative is implemented from the government, we need to see the results of these before making further changes. For example, the TEMAG review has not yet seen full cohorts of students graduating under all the new requirements - therefore we can't make judgements.

Professional Experience Placements should be strengthened - allocation of supervising schools, quality and experience of supervising teachers, ability for placements to be able to be undertaken - not enough schools/supervisor. Perhaps consider brining back in money to fund placements.

Prior work and skils should be recognised.

First Nationals people should join the professiona and we need to support them as much as possible to ensure increased numbers.

Maximising the time to teach

The actions proposed will improve retention and free up teachers to focus on teaching and collaboration.

Strongly agree

Teachers' workloads need to be reduced, particularly in areas that are not related to teaching. Early in their career, intitial teacher eduction students need be support, perhaps as para-professionals.

Rural and regional communities should be consulted in relation to employing para-professionals.

Better understanding future teacher workforce needs

How effective are the proposed actions in better understanding future teacher workforce needs, including the number of teachers required?

Very effective

We need to better understnad workforce needs. What does "publish nationally consistent ITE graduate supply data" include? An independent committee should handle the data collection, analysis and reporting.

Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.

Somewhat agree

Professional learning should be provided across the career of a teacher. This PL should be of high quality and accessable to all teachers, across the state - consideration for high quality online learning should be provided.
