Elevating the profession

The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

Somewhat disagree

Would you like to provide feedback about these actions?

The promotion of the High Accomplished Lead Teacher has already failed with only about 1000 out 300,000 teachers pursuing this since 2012.

The low numbers of teachers choosing this is already a NO vote from teachers. The cost in time and money are raised as issues.

Studies from USA show this sort of certification does not improve student achievement-
Hacke (2010) and Harris and Sass (2007).

The NSW parliamentary enquiry this year also noted-

ITEM 2.12 on p. 17
"The system of teacher promotions in New South Wales is also cumbersome and outdated. Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation has been inadequate, with only a small number of teachers applying and qualifying each year. The additional data collection and paperwork and the requirement to self-advocate serve to disincentivise teachers from pursuing this higher accreditation."

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

reduce from 2 years down to 1 year at University and and provide more classroom experience with mentors in 2 nd year.

Focusing on collaboration is the key, reducing the the requirements of of top down approaches, e.g. High Impact Teaching Strategies in Victoria, What Works Best in NSW, & the QLD requirement to align strategies with Hattie's Visible Learning.

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
