Elevating the profession

The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

Neither agree nor disagree

We have been devalued as a profession for the last 20 years to the point where I would not recommend the profession to my students. The pay rate is laughable and has not matched the increased level of knowledge/skills needed. The parental expectation of a personalized education can only be facilitated with less face to face teaching and admin and more compensation for the out of hours work that is an expectation. Only an improved pay rate will attract people to the profession and make a value statement to the community of our worth. All the warm and fuzzy awards and platitudes fall short when young men do not see the profession as a viable income for a family.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

Somewhat agree

Rushing university students into schools takes more teachers away from classes as they need coaching and support beyond the level where a first year out teacher can run a class themselves.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

Much of the set up work for each semester could be completed if there was a week of professional learning at the start of each semester without students. There is a similar system in Singapore during their mid-year break.

Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
