I’m a student teacher in an ITE program about to commence my final year. Over the years I have seen many of my peers drop out of this degree due to the lack of support offered. I have a few suggestions to address this issue of students not making it out of their degree and into the teaching profession.

I have 12 weeks of placement next year. I am absolutely terrified about not being able to pay my rent or put food on the table because I will not be able to go to my normal job. There needs to be more financial support for ALL student teachers on placement, not just those going rural or those who achieved highly in school.

One suggestion I’ve heard is to introduce a loan similar to OS-HELP which would allow us to borrow money while we go on placement and pay it back like our HECS-HELP debt when we are financially stable and earning above a certain amount per year.

I also think we should make the LANTITE test free. As if we weren’t already under enough financial pressures, we have to pay $200 for each attempt at a test in order to graduate. I get that we need literate and numerate teachers but make it more accessible please!

I strongly believe these measures will mean more pre-service teachers graduate from their program and into a job in the teaching profession.
