Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

think an intern/apprenticeship model needs to be investigated. All graduates are set up to be ill equipped for the actual job. 12-16 weeks placement is nowhere near enough to prepare anyone for the complexities of the job. Parents, students, behaviours, planning, instruction etc need to be part of the intern/apprenticeship. It should also be paid at minimum wage whilst studying. This would allow graduates to be well prepared when they’ve yet their first position. If the model is not changed we will continue to lose graduates early in their career as they are thrown to the wolves due to the current system. ATAR remains as is and students still enrol in university as is. Subjects could be completed in blocks and students can put learnings into context and focus on what has been taught in university blocks. If we want more to enter the education field, change away from the current model is needed.
