The actions proposed recognise the value teachers bring to students, communities and the economy.

The community is totally unaware of the unrealistic expectations placed upon teachers- this includes a crowded curriculum, workload pressures and the ever increasing special needs of students.
The community is also unaware of the lack of support given to teachers to cater for the differing and complex needs of their students and the workload issues that teachers are facing.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

How about prioritising the retention of the experienced teachers already in the system. Reduce their workload by providing more support and resources to deliver the curriculum and to cater for students with complex needs.

Stop the 'churn and burn' culture within the system.

Strengthening Initial Teacher Education (ITE)

The actions proposed will ensure initial teacher education supports teacher supply and quality.

There is nothing wrong with the quality of teachers in the system - everyone is doing the best they can to cater for the students in their care.

However, what is amiss is the lack of support to implement the crowded curriculum , manage student behaviour and sheer workload expectations. More data collection does not translate in to better outcomes if there is no classroom support to run relevant programs. This means extra teachers need to be employed in all primary schools to support student learning.

Maximising the time to teach

The actions proposed will improve retention and free up teachers to focus on teaching and collaboration.

Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
