Would you like to provide feedback about these actions?

If we truly value teachers we will pay them what they are worth. The actions listed are tokenistic and are of little consequence to most Australians and most teachers. Strengthen the value of all teachers, not just a few who have the resources and support to write the ridiculous applications for these awards.

Improving teacher supply

The actions proposed will be effective in increasing the number of students entering ITE, number of students completing ITE and the number of teachers staying in and/or returning to the profession.

We need greater incentives for staff to stay in difficult to staff schools. Stop the drain of high quality teaching graduates all moving to the private sector where the conditions are considerable more supportive and targeted.

Sort out the poor standard of pedagogy we are teaching at university with regard to literacy acquisition in the early years. New graduates always have to be completely retrained in phonics, the science of reading etc as their uni degree has left them completely unprepared to teach these skills.

So many of the teachers in rural and remote areas face massive challenges with housing. Greater quantity and quality of housing in these areas will significantly impact the quality of teachers in these schools. We currently in Esperance have teachers in temporary or shared housing for 18 months and this is a major deterrent for new staff.

Better career pathways to support and retain teachers in the profession

The proposed actions will improve career pathways, including through streamlining the process for Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation, and providing better professional support for teachers to retain them in the profession.
