Education Ministers Meeting

What is the Education Ministers Meeting?

The Education Ministers Meeting is a forum for collaboration and decision-making on:

  • early childhood education and care
  • school education
  • higher education
  • international education.

Australian, State and Territory government ministers responsible for education attend the meeting.

The Commonwealth Minister for Education is the Chair of the Education Ministers Meeting.

How often is the meeting?

The Education Ministers Meeting is generally held four times a year. In 2024, Education Ministers have so far met on;

  • 23 February 2024

In 2023, Education Ministers met on the following dates;

  • 10 February 2023
  • 27 February 2023
  • 6 July 2023
  • 5 October 2023
  • 21 November 2023
  • 11 December 2023

In 2022, Education Ministers met on the following dates;

  • 4 February 2022
  • 1 April 2022
  • 9 September 2022
  • 12 August 2022
  • 15 December 2022

The work priorities

In December 2022, Education Ministers agreed to focus on the following three national priorities for 2023:

  • Developing a long-term vision for the Early Childhood Education and Care sector, to support parents’ workforce participation and early learning and child development.
  • Implementing the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan, which sets out a clear pathway to addressing the national issue of teacher workforce shortages.
  • Developing the next National School Reform Agreement, which is an important vehicle through which governments across Australia work together to deliver quality school education.

Delivering the work priorities

The Australian Education Senior Officials Committee is the primary subcommittee of senior officials supporting the Education Ministers Meeting.

The committee is responsible to the Education Ministers Meeting for the execution of its decisions.

Commonwealth-State Relations

In May 2020 the Prime Minister announced that the former Council of Australian Governments (COAG) ceased. The new architecture for federal relations includes the Education Ministers Meeting.
