The National History Challenge (NHC) gives primary and secondary students the opportunity to be historians, research world history and discover Australia’s past.
The NHC is a free research-based competition that rewards students for their quality research, their use of community resources and effective presentation.
Theme
The theme for 2023 is “Change and Continuity” which offers students the opportunity to explore various topics in history, for example, fashion, medicine or social movements. All entries must focus on the theme. With guidance, students can apply the theme to a variety of contexts within their particular state or territory’s curriculum.
Entry details
Teachers can submit their students’ entries on the National History Challenge’s website. Students are encouraged to speak with their teachers if they are interested in entering.
Students can also choose if they would like to enter a special category which allows them to focus their research on a select number of topics. Students may enter using presentation formats, including an individual research essay, a 3D model or a range of other formats. Learn more about how to enter.
Rewards include prizes and travel to Canberra for the National Presentation Ceremony in November 2023. Prizes are awarded to the National Young Historian of the Year, State Young Historians of the Year, year level winners and winners in special categories.
