The Australian Government is providing $7.89 million to La Trobe University to pilot the first employment-based pathway into primary school teaching under the High Achieving Teachers (HAT) Program.
The Nexus Primary Program Pilot will place participants in primary schools that need them most in Victoria and New South Wales.
The Pilot will deliver the first 105 of the additional 1,500 HAT Program places funded under Action 3 of the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan. The Plan sets out a clear pathway for addressing the national issue of teacher workforce shortages.
About the Pilot
Participants will receive mentoring and support while gaining paid practical teaching experience and a Master of Teaching (Primary) qualification. Recruitment will commence later this year with the first participants beginning their placements in primary schools in April 2024.
The pilot will sit under the HAT Program which provides Australian Government funding for employment-based pathways into teaching. The program broadens the entry points into the teaching profession by providing opportunities to gain teaching qualifications to people who already hold a university degree, including mid‑career professionals interested in transitioning to a new career in education.
