Funding Amounts

Australian Government funding for the National Industry PhD Program is provided to eligible Australian Higher Education Providers (HEPs).

The funding is provided in accordance with Part 2–3 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA) and Australian Government contributions will be indexed in future years in accordance with Part 5–6 of the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA)

Chapter 4 of the Other Grants Guidelines (Research) 2017 provides the legislative basis for the provision of funding under the Program and prescribes the conditions that apply.

Full-time
  1. Eligible PhD Candidate will receive a stipend top-up for up to four years:
    • $10,000 minimum per annum from Industry Partner
    • $6,694 per annum from the Australian Government
  2. Participating University will receive $11,157 per annum for up to four years, for each candidate.

Industry Linked

Part-time
  1. Eligible PhD Candidate will receive a stipend top-up for up to eight years:
    • $5,000 minimum per annum from Industry Partner
    • $3,347 per annum from the Australian Government
  2. Participating University will receive $5,578 per annum for up to eight years, for each candidate.

Industry Researcher

Full-time
  1. Eligible PhD Candidate will retain their full salary and benefits while undertaking PhD study for up to four years.
  2. Industry Partner will receive a subsidy of $44,629 per annum for up to four years, for each candidate.
  3. Participating University will receive $11,157 per annum for up to four years, for each candidate.

Industry Researcher

Part-time
  1. Eligible PhD Candidate will retain their full salary and benefits while undertaking PhD study up for to eight years.
  2. Industry Partner will receive a subsidy of $22,314 per annum for up to eight years, for each candidate.
  3. Participating University will receive $5,578 per annum for up to eight years, for each candidate.

    • $5,000 minimum per annum from Industry Partner
    • $3,105 per annum from the Australian Government
  2. Participating University will receive $5,175 per annum for up to eight years, for each candidate.

Industry Researcher

Full-time
  1. Eligible PhD Candidate will retain their full salary and benefits while undertaking PhD study for up to four years.
  2. Industry Partner will receive a subsidy of $41,400 per annum for up to four years, for each candidate.
  3. Participating University will receive $10,350 per annum for up to four years, for each candidate.

Industry Researcher

  1. Eligible PhD Candidate will retain their full salary and benefits while undertaking PhD study up for to eight years.
  2. Industry Partner will receive a subsidy of $20,700 per annum for up to eight years, for each candidate.
  3. Participating University will receive $5,175 per annum for up to eight years, for each candidate.
