International student monthly summary

Use the report to explore different views of data on enrolments, commencements and student numbers by month, year, education sector, source country and state/territory.

Key points

  • In the year-to-date January 2024, there were 582,636 enrolments by international students, incorporating 523,403 enrolments carried over from 2023 and 59,233 commencements. January data should be interpreted with caution as most students will not commence semester-length courses before February or March. • Fifty-six per cent of international students were from the following five student source countries: China (20 per cent of international students), India (17 per cent), Nepal (9 per cent), Philippines (6 per cent) and Vietnam (5 per cent).
  • Growth in enrolments since 2019 is highest in the VET sector (54 per cent).

  • Enrolments in ELICOS grew by 18 per cent compared to 2019 levels.
