Professor Margaret Sheil AO has issued a call for submissions to the review of the Australian Research Council Act 2001 (ARC Act).
The ARC is a critical part of the Australian research landscape, administering the National Competitive Grants Program, assessing Australian university research and providing high quality advice and support to the Minister on research matters.
Professor Sheil, who is Vice-Chancellor and President of the Queensland University of Technology, chairs a panel that also includes Professor Susan Dodds, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research and Industry Engagement) at La Trobe University, and Professor Mark Hutchinson, Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale BioPhotonics at the University of Adelaide.
‘To assist those wishing to contribute to the review, the panel has released a series of consultation questions within an online survey. They outline some of the key issues, particularly those that have been raised by stakeholders in our initial round of consultations,’ Professor Sheil said.
‘Already it is clear that there is a lot of interest in this review so the panel anticipates receiving good quality feedback from interested organisations and individuals.’
Submissions can be made up to and including 14 December 2022, when the period for accepting submissions will close. The panel is conducting consultations with peak bodies across the sector as well as key government agencies and will also hold focus groups with relevant stakeholders.
‘The review affords both universities and their partners and stakeholders with an important opportunity to share their vision of how the ARC can support the future of Australian research,’ Professor Sheil said.
‘I encourage all interested stakeholders to contribute to the review process.’
The Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP, announced the panel’s appointment and the review on 30 August 2022.
The panel is due to deliver an interim report by 31 December 2022 and its final report with recommendations by 31 March 2023.
